Drinking Water Standards for Regulated Contaminants

The Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) is the legislative authorization and direction for most of the EPA drinking water regulations. This was originally passed in 1974, and revised in 1986 and 1996. This document is an overview of the different component rules that make up the SDWA.

National Primary Drinking Water Regulations (NPDWRs or primary standards)

This document provides a concise overview of the current primary (legally enforceable) and secondary (recommended) standards that apply to drinking water. The document also includes a brief description of the potential health effects of the contaminants, and the most likely sources of the contaminant in the drinking water.
